Pediatric cardiology is the pediatric subspecialty that diagnoses and treats heart problems in children. It covers both congenital heart defects, such as holes between the heart chambers, and acquired conditions that develop later in childhood, including rhythm disorders. Symptoms such as a heart murmur, fainting, shortness of breath or poor weight gain in infants are common reasons for a referral.

Care is usually multidisciplinary, bringing together pediatricians, cardiovascular surgeons, nurses and technicians. Many examinations are painless and non-invasive, and some defects can be treated with catheter-based methods instead of open surgery. Families in Turkey receive a structured plan for monitoring and long-term follow-up.
